Looking for a cost effective, quick and simple alternative to Tox? Tretinoin, also known as Retin-A is a prescription strength topical medication. It’s over the counter (non-prescription) and less potent version is retinol.

Tretinoin works by modifying the more superficial layers of your skin by increasing skin cell turnover (which can help to decrease the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles!!), and also helps to address acne lesions, pore size, and overall skin texture… talk about killing two birds with one stone!

A main side effect is dryness or irritation of the skin. Typically, I instruct patients to apply a thin layer to the entire face every other night for 2 weeks. After 2 weeks, the patient may apply nightly as tolerated. However, I always caution to use as needed during times of cooler/colder weather (fall/winter) to decrease the likelihood of dryness and irritation of the skin. This medication is not for those who are pregnant or nursing.

With insurance, a 30 gram tube of Tretinoin can cost anywhere from $10-$60. Competitive cash pricing can also be found via GoodRx and Cost Plus Drugs by Mark Cuban. Tox can typically run anywhere from $12-$14/unit, a conservative treatment may cost your around $300-$350.
